East Coast Piers Race 2026 – Tracking, Safety and Race Analysis

The 2026 East Coast Piers Race once again demonstrated why it is regarded as one of the UK's premier long-distance sailing events. Hosted by Marconi Sailing Club, the weekend featured two outstanding endurance races – the 27-mile Colne Point Race and the iconic 44-mile East Coast Piers Race (ECPR).

With fast catamarans and dinghies racing over many miles of open water, the event demands excellent seamanship, tactical awareness and endurance. For the second consecutive year, TracTracUK was proud to provide the official GPS tracking, supporting not only the live race experience but also the safety management of the fleet and the post-race analysis that has become a highlight of the event.

Supporting Safety Throughout the Event

Long-distance racing presents unique challenges for race management. As the fleet spreads over many miles of coastline, maintaining an accurate picture of every competitor's position becomes increasingly important.

Every boat competing in both the Colne Point Race and the East Coast Piers Race and the supporting Safety Team carried a TracTracUK GPS tracker, allowing Race Control to monitor the entire fleet live throughout each race.

Should a boat stop unexpectedly or require assistance, its precise location was immediately available to the safety team, allowing support boats to respond quickly and efficiently. Working alongside the excellent volunteer safety crews and race management team, TracTracUK formed an important part of the event's overall safety plan, giving organisers and competitors greater confidence throughout both races.

Colne Point Race – Speed Matters

The Colne Point Race is often decided by maintaining consistently high average speeds rather than making dramatic tactical gains.

During the Race Replay session, we examined how the leading boats managed to maintain superior VMG while sailing remarkably efficient courses around the marks. Small differences in average speed, combined with smooth manoeuvres and accurate mark roundings, produced significant gains over the course of the 27-mile race.

The replay allowed competitors to compare their own tracks directly against the race leaders, highlighting where valuable minutes were won or lost.

East Coast Piers Race – Every Decision Counts

The 44-mile East Coast Piers Race is a true endurance challenge where tactical decisions become increasingly important as the race unfolds.

Using the TracTracUK replay, sailors could see exactly how the race developed around each of the East Coast piers, comparing different route choices, boat speeds and sailing angles throughout the course.

The replay highlighted how successful crews combined:

  • Consistent boat speed

  • Excellent VMG

  • Efficient sailing lines

  • Strong tactical decision making

  • Minimal distance sailed

These are often the small differences that separate the front of the fleet from the rest of the field.

Race Replay – See How Races Are Won

Following the race weekend, TracTracUK hosted a live online Race Replay on the Tuesday evening, giving competitors the opportunity to relive both races together. The interactive session brought sailors back to the virtual racecourse, with GPS tracking replayed in real time while key moments and tactical decisions were discussed.

Rather than simply looking at finishing positions, we analysed:

  • Starting strategy and early positioning

  • VMG versus outright boat speed

  • Distance sailed compared with the fastest boats

  • Who each leg

  • Route selection and tactical decisions

  • Gains and losses between marks

  • Where overtakes occurred

  • The key moments that shaped each race

The sessions generated excellent discussion amongst competitors, demonstrating once again how GPS tracking has become a valuable coaching and learning tool, not just for elite sailors but for everyone taking part.

As we like to say: Results tell you who won. TracTracUK shows you how they won.

Thank You

A huge thank you to Marconi Sailing Club, the East Coast Piers Race organising team, the race officers, safety crews and volunteers for delivering another fantastic event.

It was a pleasure for TracTracUK to play such an important role in the success of the weekend—enhancing safety on the water, providing live tracking for spectators ashore, and delivering race replay sessions that gave competitors a unique insight into how the Colne Point Race and the East Coast Piers Race were won.
