Final day video report 505 Worlds

Tracking the 505 Worlds: See How Races Are Won

The 2026 505 World Championship at Hayling Island Sailing Club brought together some of the very best sailors in one of the fastest and most tactical dinghy classes in the world.

For TracTracUK, it was also an opportunity to do something a little different.

We provided full live GPS tracking throughout the championship, while also producing daily video coverage from the racecourse — combining tracking data, drone footage and on-the-water interviews to tell the story of each day's racing.

Capturing the 505's Class-Defining Gate Starts

The gate start is one of the defining features of 505 racing.

Rather than the fleet lining up against a conventional start line, the pathfinder sails on port tack while a gate boat follows. Competitors choose when to cross behind the pathfinder and begin their race.

Get it right and you can launch into clear air, at full speed, with the freedom to execute your race plan.

Get it wrong and the consequences can follow you all the way to the first mark.

It is spectacular to watch — and fascinating to track.

With TracTrac live tracking, we captured the movement of the entire fleet through every gate start. The replay allows sailors and spectators to see where each boat entered the gate, how the fleet developed after the start and which tactical decisions paid off on the first beat.

Results show who won. Tracking shows how.

Live Tracking Every Move

Throughout the 505 Worlds, TracTracUK tracked the fleet live from the racecourse.

Sailors, coaches and supporters could follow the action through the TracTrac web platform, while the race data gave us a much deeper view of what was happening on the water.

Boat speed, distance sailed, VMG and changes in position all helped to build a picture of how races were being won and lost.

The tracking wasn't simply a dot moving around a map.

It became part of the story of the championship.

Drone Footage Meets Tracking Data

For the 505 Worlds, we also provided the championship's daily video updates.

Operating from the water, we captured drone footage of the racing, with a particular focus on the spectacular gate starts and the key moments around the course.

The aerial footage gave us the big picture.

The tracking gave us the data.

Bringing the two together allowed us to show the racing from two very different perspectives. We could watch a boat make a tactical move from the air and then use the tracking replay to understand how that decision affected its position in the fleet.

Talking to the Race Winners on the Water

One of the highlights of the coverage was being able to speak directly to race winners on the water, while the race was still fresh in their minds.

These weren't interviews hours later in the boat park.

We caught up with sailors on the racecourse and asked the simple questions: What did you see? Where did you make the gain? What was the key moment in the race?

We could then compare the sailors' view of the race with the GPS tracking data and drone footage.

It created a much more complete picture of how the world's best 505 sailors approach a race.

Daily Video Updates from the Championship

Each day, over he 6 day competiton we produced a video update bringing together the best of the action.

  • Drone footage from the racecourse.

  • On-the-water interviews.

  • The stories behind the racing.

And TracTrac data showing how the key tactical battles developed.

Our aim was simple: to create fast, engaging daily content that gave sailors and supporters a reason to follow the championship throughout the week.

The viewing figures and engagement with the daily reports showed the appetite for this type of event coverage.

More Than Live Tracking

The 505 Worlds demonstrated where we believe event coverage is heading.

Live tracking gives spectators a way to follow racing in real time. But when tracking data is combined with drone footage, racecourse video and interviews with the sailors, it becomes a powerful storytelling tool.

For classes and sailing events, this means one team can provide the live tracking, capture the action and produce daily media content directly from the racecourse.

At TracTracUK, we're not just showing where the boats are.

We're helping sailing events show how races are won.
